What Is Explosion-Proof Lighting?

Explosion-proof (Ex) lighting is built so an internal spark or hot surface cannot ignite flammable gas, vapour or dust in a hazardous area, certified to ATEX/IECEx.

Answer: Explosion-proof (Ex) lighting is a luminaire engineered so that any spark, arc or hot surface generated inside the fitting cannot ignite flammable gas, vapour or dust in a hazardous area. It uses flameproof enclosures, intrinsically safe or pressurized circuits, and IP66+ sealing, and is certified to standards such as ATEX or IECEx for specific zones.

Hazardous areas and zones

Hazardous areas are classified by the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere: Zones 0/1/2 for gas and 20/21/22 for dust. The zone sets how stringent the Ex protection must be.

How Ex protection works

Flameproof (Ex d) enclosures contain an internal explosion and cool the escaping gases so they cannot ignite the surrounding atmosphere. Other methods include intrinsic safety (Ex i) and pressurized enclosures (Ex p).

Certification

Compliance is proven through ATEX (EU) or IECEx (global) certification with markings that state the zone, gas/dust group and temperature class.

Where it is used

Oil & gas, chemical plants, grain handling, paint booths, mining and wastewater — anywhere flammable atmospheres occur. See IWAY industrial & explosion-proof lighting.
