How to Select Explosion-Proof Lighting for Hazardous Areas

Select Ex lighting by zone, gas/dust group, temperature class, ingress protection and certification, then confirm corrosion rating for the environment.

Answer: Select explosion-proof lighting by first defining the hazard: the zone (0/1/2 gas or 20/21/22 dust), the gas or dust group, and the required temperature class (T-rating). Then choose a luminaire with the matching ATEX/IECEx certification, IP66+ sealing and a corrosion rating suited to the environment.

Step 1 — classify the area

Determine the zone and whether the risk is gas or dust. This single step dictates the minimum Ex protection level you must specify.

Step 2 — group and temperature class

Match the equipment group (II for gas / III for dust) and the T-rating so the surface temperature stays below the auto-ignition temperature of the specific atmosphere.

Step 3 — ingress and corrosion

Demand IP66 or higher and a housing rated for the chemicals, washdown and salt/corrosion present on site.

Step 4 — certification

Confirm valid ATEX and/or IECEx certification and the correct marking. Review the IWAY Ex product range against your classification.
